"I’m worried my hair is falling out! My hairdresser told me that my hair is much thinner than it used to be and I’ve noticed a change in thickness myself. I thought only men lost their hair when they got older."

As a dermatologist I frequently hear this complaint from women. Although men are more likely to lose their hair, women and children are also subject to excessive hair loss. Shedding some hair on a daily basis is normal but when it becomes excessive it could have an underlying cause. Most people assume that baldness is a result of age or genetics but there are many things that can cause hair loss.

*Major surgery or serious illness may cause a sudden loss of hair after 3 to 4 months but it is temporary and will grow back.

*Hormone imbalance, known as androgens and estrogens (male/female), is a very common cause of hair loss in both men and women. Many women notice hair loss after giving birth because high levels of certain hormones cause the body to keep hair that would normally fall out. After the birth of a baby, that hair falls out and the normal cycle of hair growth resumes.

*Some medicines cause hair loss such as blood thinners, drugs for high blood pressure, gout, birth control pills and antidepressants.

*Fungal infections of the scalp or an underlying disease such as lupus or diabetes can result in hair loss.

What About Pattern Baldness?

Everyone loses hair but men lose it earlier, faster, and more extensively. This is due to what most people refer to as common baldness or male – pattern baldness, which is responsible for 95% of all hair loss. This type of hair loss is usually inherited and is marked by a receding hair line and baldness on the top of the head.

About 15% of all women develop some degree of pattern baldness in which the hair becomes thin over the entire scalp. In some cases female pattern hair loss can produce bald patches along with thinning.

Hair follicles grow hairs within a normal cycle that lasts for 2 to 3 years. About 90 % of the hair on your head is growing and about 10% is in a resting phase. After 3 to 4 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair begins to grow. For people with a genetic tendency for baldness, the hair begins to grow in thinner, shorter, and lighter when they reach a certain age. Eventually, new hairs stop growing creating a thin spot or balding.

Genetic hair loss can begin as early as 17 years of age and by age 50 approximately 60% of all men will show signs of significant hair loss. Pattern baldness begins most often between the ages of 24-38 years of age.

Is There Any Hope For Hair Loss?

When patients come to me with concerns about hair loss, I ask questions about their diet, medicines they might be taking, and whether they have had a recent illness. Female patients are questioned about their menstrual cycle, pregnancies and menopause to better understand hormonal triggers. In some cases a physical exam, blood tests or a biopsy may be needed to get a better picture of the cause of hair loss. It is important to understand the possible causes in order to make an informed decision about how to treat the condition.

Once the cause of your hair loss has been determined, various treatments can be helpful in restoring hair growth or slowing down the development of common baldness. You may be asked to change your medication if that is what’s causing you to lose your hair. If hormonal imbalance is to blame, there are medications to help prevent further hair loss.

There are medicines available without a prescription such as minoxidil that is applied to the scalp to help generate hair growth and can be used by both men and women. Keep in mind that medicines of this nature are composed of chemicals and as with many drugs, may produce side effects.

Vitamins and Diet Changes

Natural hair loss remedies have been used for years to reverse the loss of hair from disease of vitamin deficiencies. Sometimes changing to an organic, pesticide-free diet and taking vitamin supplements can help people recover from premature hair loss. Adding scalp massage, herbal remedies, and exercise to the mix has helped many people rejuvenate their hair growth.

A diet rich in whole food along with taking a multi-vitamin is recommended. Researchers have also found that increasing the amount of B vitamins (1/2/12) is helpful in reversing hair loss. As a word of caution; be sure to consult your doctor or nutritionist before making any drastic changes to your diet.

There are also herbal hair growth treatments that have been passed down from generation to generation as therapy for hair loss. These include:

*Rosemary – Made into tea and rinsed through the hair daily.
*Mallow roots – Boiled in wine and massaged into the scalp weekly.
*Nettles – Infused in water and combed through the hair daily.
*Artichoke leaves – Simmered in water for several hours and applied as a nightly massage.
*Catnip – Made into an infusion and rinsed through the hair daily.
*Parsley seeds – Crushed and applied in powder form to the scalp monthly. The powder is allowed to remain overnight, and brushed out of thoroughly in the morning.

If you find more hair than usual collecting in your shower drain or on your pillow each morning, check with your doctor. There could be a reason why you are losing more hair than normal. Don’t assume your hair loss is a result of common baldness; consider trying some of the suggestions offered here to help restore your hair to its original fullness.

Is your hair loss giving you sleepless nights? I understand how horrible it can be for you, but you really ought to be happy that you were born in this era of advanced medical technology because hair loss now has hair loss treatments work to restore your hair.

Many individuals all over the world still carry their bald hairs around and do nothing about it because they don’t know a solution exists. That’s one of the sad aspects of life. People continue to do things the old way because they don’t know any other way of doing them. That shouldn’t apply to you. If you feel threatened by hair loss, there’s a whole hair loss treatments you can do. You don’t have to live the rest of your life with the condition. Various hair loss treatments can be done.

First, there are lots of hair loss treatments out there that really work. While not all of them work, lots of them do work and can help you get rid of hair loss, if you try them. I know you might have a friend who insists a certain hair loss treatments worked for them, but that doesn’t mean it must work for you. It all depends on your hair type and the cause, level and type of hair loss you are suffering from. That’s why it’s always highly recommended that you seek your doctor’s help and guidance when it comes to the right hair loss treatments.

Secondly, if you have tried all types of hair loss treatments and they fail, you can consider going for hair transplant. It’s very expensive I know, but it will be worth it for you, especially if you can afford it. If you have suffered bald hair for a long period of time, such solutions can be very wonderful for you. Within a short time your previously bald hair will be with hair once again. Isn’t science and technology wonderful? I think it is and I do not know why anyone shouldn’t take advantage of the awesomeness of such medical breath through. Anyone that doesn’t take advantage of such is just kidding themselves.

Lastly, hair loss is indeed not a big problem anymore. With the many hair loss treatments out there and hair transplant, you can get your hair back and full whenever you want to. It’s all about whether or not you can afford to get your hair back, not whether it is possible!

Shaving, is it fair that some men get razor burn, little annoying cuts and just plain out hate shaving, and other men shave once a week and the hair falls off so easily? No it is not, but instead of complaining I have went on a mission for all of us men and I have found a remedy. See I have fair skin and dark hair so my 5 o’clock shadow shows up at around one o’clock! Not to mention that it grows as fast as you can add water to a chia pet. . In addition to the chia pet feature, I get very bad razor burn, so after trying everything under the sun all the different products for men, new razors, an electric razor, everything under the sun and guess what? None of them worked. The remedy I found is Laser Hair Removal and I did it on my face. Yes it is odd, and yes I was a guinea pig for the laser boutique. They had never had a request for a man to do his face. But I was fed up and needed to do something extreme so I did it.

I went in for my first session, they had me put some numbing cream on my face about an hour before I got there, I was a little nervous but I was ok when we got started. Then I couldn’t figure out if I was getting interrogated by Jack Bauer from 24 or a nice girl was doing her job!! WOW that laser is crazy, it felt like an electric shock every second, I was sweating I was trying to act macho,( the girl was hot) even though I wanted to cry. But after the session was over I washed my face realized I wasn’t in jail and washed my face.

I did six sessions in about an eight week period, after the third period I started noticing my hairs wouldn’t all grow back. It was growing back in patches, which wasn’t that big of a deal but it did look a little weird for a few weeks. After my 5th session the patchiness had stopped. I did my last session which was my 6th one and wanted to see what would happen, also my goal in doing the laser wasn’t to never have my hair grow back I just wanted it to slow down and try to get the razor burn and the irritation away

The results were great, I went from shaving every other day, to twice a week, no more razor burns, no more skin irritations it was amazing. I paid $75.00 a session and it was well worth it. I loved the way how I got to cut down on shaving, but I have to say the best part was getting rid of the skin irritations, and razor burns getting rid of that alone was worth the shock therapy( you get used it after the second time). It is 6 years later and its time for me to go back to the torture chamber, I guess the timeline is about 6 years. So I am making the call and doing it again. If anyone hates shaving as much as I do then you just found your remedy. You can call any local laser place(make sure they are reputable, it is you face)set up an appointment and Voila your all set to go. Have fun if you decide to do it please let me know email me at

Anti-Hair Loss Shampoos

Anti-Hair Loss Shampoos : Rub-a-Dub Dub – But Gently PleaseOne easy-to-try option is a shampoo specifically designed to increase the health of existing hair and to reduce the rate of hair loss in both men and women. There are several sources to investigate specific shampoos, research studies which can be accessed to determine the effectiveness of many of these products. Good professional sources include dermatologists and licensed cosmeticians who see hair loss conditions frequently and have had the opportunity to observe the efficacy of a variety of shampoos. As well, an Internet “Google” search will provide hundreds of products, complete with testimony and small research studies. It’s easy to get confused when investigating the hundreds of shampoos available. With some background knowledge of what has shown to be effective in larger, previous studies, however, you can make more intelligent choices about the shampoos you choose for experimentation. And that is the great thing about shampoos – they are relatively inexpensive in this maze of hair loss/regrowth methods, so you can try lots of them without breaking your budget!

1. Surfactants: People feel good when their shampoos lather up nicely. Lather, however, is just for psychological effect. Somehow we believe that the more lather a shampoo produces, the cleaner our hair must be getting. Hogwash! The ingredient that causes lather is call a surfactant and does not have cleaning properties. Other ingredients in shampoos actually do the cleaning. Surfactants are, however, pretty harsh, and, for someone who is experiencing more-than-normal hair loss, surfactants should be avoided. There are lots of shampoos out there without it – try some.

2. Herbal Ingredients: The most notable herb with some success in hair loss difficulty is Saw Palmetto. Shampoos with this ingredient are certainly worth a try. Saw Palmetto seems to inhibit the production of DHT in men, for example, and DHT causes hair follicles to shrink and close up

.3. Nettle and bay have also been helpful to some people. Shampoos which include these might help you too.

4. Essential Oils: These oils are concentrated ones which come from plants such as lavender. From ancient times, these have been used to stimulate healthy hair and to decrease the rate of hair loss. We know that we have much to learn from early medicine men and healers. Perhaps this is another example.

5. Tea Tree Oil: Many swear by this ingredient, and there are several brands of this on the market. So popular are these shampoos, you can find them at most any drug store as well as health product retailers. As an aside, tea tree oil has also been found to be effective in the prevention of head lice infestations. There are no definitive studies to show that shampoos can actually result in regrowth of hair that is caused by what we all “permanent” conditions, largely the result of heredity and hormones. However, early prevention is important, and experimenting with shampoos during these early stages may provide invaluable help in reducing the rate of loss.

If you are considering laser hair removal and you are wondering about some of the side effects that may occur afterwards then please continue reading as here I am writing about laser hair removal infections with before and after care.

There really are not too many cases of hair removal infections; it is regarded as very safe and comfortable. Some things that you may want to consider if you have a history with the herpes simplex virus, also known as cold sores, then you will need to consult with the laser operator and if you are not currently using one, they can prescribe an anti-viral medication. You will need to begin the anti-viral treatment about two weeks before the actual laser treatment begins.

Sometimes people get what is known as a superficial burns from the laser hair removal treatment which is not serious but it makes the person more susceptible to a bacterial infection. Again, you can simply speak to your consultant and have them write you a prescription for an antibiotic or whatever medication is necessary to clear it up.

To care for the treated area after each procedure is preformed, as redness and bumps may appear and lasting up to two or more hours, use a cold compress, Aloe Vera gel or sun burn cream to sooth the sensitive spots.

It is important to keep the treated area moisturized, Any moisturiser without alpha hydroxy acids will work. Avoiding direct sun exposure will minimise light or dark spot appearing and sensible advise is to stay shaded for up to two months. Use sunscreen SPF25 or higher at all times throughout the laser treatment sessions. You can shower no problem after the treatment and using a mild soap on the treated area.

You cannot laser any broken skin or around the eyes which are too sensitive to the lasers rays and so you should beware of any clinics that claim they will remove any unwanted eyebrow hair. Also, if you have had any recent sun exposure, you will need to make this known to the laser technician but as professionals, they should be really asking you this question before you have to tell them. Skin pigment disruption can occur if you are treated after you have been in direct sunlight.

As always it is wise to consult with a qualified doctor or qualified expert before taking the steps to have laser hair removal preformed as certain skin types are more sensitive and certain conditions may prevent you from being able to go through with it.

Currently there is no law against anyone setting up a laser clinic even in their own home in many countries including the USA and most of Europe and so it is up to the patient to do the ground work to find out if the clinic they intend to attend is reputable and safe

Say the phrase "the bald and the beautiful’ out loud. You might be thinking there something that is just not right with that word combination; it simply does not have the same ring to it now does it! Well, you could be partially right. However, I have news for you; hair loss is not the end of the world. If you doubted that those two words can exist within the same statement, well guess again. Hair loss is not the ‘end of my social life’ that many of us have grown to believe. There are worse things that can happen to a man which I will not go into the details of here.

Bottom line though is hair loss is not only not necessarily negative, but it has also been quite the advantage in certain circumstances. If you had not heard of the studies that showed women were actually attracted to bald men, well now you know it! Now before you take that shaver and get rid of the last remaining hair strand on your head all in an effort to orchestrate a balding coup and join the ‘winning team’, consider this; many men in history have not been too impressed with their balding heads. That explains why nowadays the proliferation of ‘instant’ and often ineffective hair growth creams is at epidemic levels; and it is not just the ordinary person in the street like you and I that is dealing with this. On the contrary, throughout history up to present day, men across the socio-economic spectrum have battled with hair loss (now there is that ring we were looking!) with somewhat mixed results.

Take Julius Caesar for instance. When it comes to discussion on great empires and rulers of old, his place is assured. But have you heard of the bald over technique? Well, Emperor Julius made this technique into an art form. In an effort to hide his fast receding hairline, he would ‘comb over’ (hence the name) his existing hair in such a way that would cover the bald part of his head. As ridiculous as that might sound, Julius Caesar is indeed in good company. Enter Donald Trump.

That’s right, the eccentric owner of the massive real estate empire with a no-holds barred love for the green back and the key character behind the hit television series ‘The Apprentice’ is a disciple of Julius Caesar; at least as far as the bald over technique is concerned. To make matters worse, some cheeky members of the fourth estate have even gone as far as claiming that what we see is not his real hair but a wig. I mean, can you believe the nerve? I mean of the journalists that is, not Donald Trump.

But even with these ‘traitors’ to the cause of the ‘bald’ nation, there are famous people that have taken the similarity between ‘bald’ and ‘bold’ to a whole new level. For basketball freaks, Michael Jordan comes to mind. This is one person that would actually scare you if you ever saw him with hair. He made bald become hip. Sean Connery, once voted the sexiest man alive, is another case in point. You can truly be bold, sorry, bald and beautiful; that is of course if you do not mind remaining so.

Do not opt for hair loss surgery when you do not have to do so. This is a solution reserved for those who have lost all their hair.

The best thing you can do if you are experiencing thinning hair is to find the treatment that has shown promise for this type of hair loss. There are natural products that will help this problem.

Hair loss is caused by several different things. If your problem is the excess production of DHT caused by testosterone, you have options.

The best thing you can do is look at the research that has been done on this type of hair loss. This will explain what exactly is happening to your hair.

The gist of this hair loss is that DHT attaches itself to hair follicles and deprives them of what they need. This causes the hair follicle to shrink and the hair to fall out.

This can also be detrimental in the production of new hair. If the follicle is damaged it cannot grow new hair.

This is the point at which most people panic and think hair loss surgery is the solution. However, this does not always hold true.

Hair loss surgery is a last resort. The expense is one of the major considerations of having this surgery.

The number of times you have to go back for the look of a full head of hair is several. On top of that, these treatments are expensive.

The treatments are also painful. If you have lost all your hair due to a genetic predisposition, this can be an option.

However, when faced with other types of hair loss, there are other solutions. Herbs, vitamins and minerals are one of these solutions.

There are several herbs in existence that have been around for many thousands of years. Although they were used for a variety of ailments, only recently have we discovered what they can do for thinning hair.

One of the reasons we are so obsessed with finding solutions for hair loss is self-esteem. Even though hair should have nothing to do with this, in all reality it does.

Women are especially sensitive about thinning hair issues. This is because a woman’s hair is considered to be one of her most valuable assets.

Every commercial we see has men and women with a full head of hair. You do not see bald people advertising many products.

Of course, shampoo and other hair care products advertisements should be done by people with hair. These are the people that use the products.

If you are faced with the loss of hair that is so great you are or will be totally bald soon, then hair loss surgery could be an answer. That is, provided that you can afford this type of surgery.

Be prepared to commit to further surgeries as well to maintain the hair. Possibly in the future there will be a better way for those who have lost all their hair to re-grow it.

Who knows? With the strides being made in the field of science today, there could well be one on the horizon.

The first IPL hair removal system was approved by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) in July 1997. Since then a number of light therapy devices have come on the market designed to eliminate unwanted body hair and stop it from growing back.

Here are two acronyms to remember -

IPL: Intense Pulsed Light

VPL: Variable Pulsed Light

VPL is an advanced version of IPL, and uses a range of specially chosen wavelengths which get maximum absorption by melanin, the pigment in hair, to facilitate the disabling of the hair follicle. The advantage of this system is that these micro pulses of light energy effectively stop the growth of all hair textures, from coarse to fine, with minimal effect on the skin.

This all sounds wonderful if you are battling unwanted body hair. Are there any disadvantages? Well, for one thing, there is the cost. IPL hair removal certainly isn’t the cheapest form of hair removal, but it certainly is not as expensive as electrolysis. This is because IPL hair removal covers a wide area at a time whereas electrolysis has to treat each hair follicle individually.

For accurate costings you need to have a consultation at the clinic you choose. They will no doubt do a test first to see how your skin receives the treatment. They will be able to give you an estimate on how many sessions you are likely to need and the approximate cost.

What’s The Risk?

Uppermost in the mind of many people is the risk factor. Is IPL hair removal risky? You sometimes hear scary stories of persons who have ended up with scarring or permanent skin damage from undergoing some forms of hair removal. As with any cosmetic procedure, you need to do your research and go with a professional therapist.

Find out how many such procedures the clinic has performed and which therapist has the greatest experience. Some clinics provide a free consultation and a satisfaction guarantee which obligates the clinic to get the result you want as far as possible.

What About Pain?

From reports, it appears IPL hair removal treatment is generally not unpleasant. Some hardly feel any discomfort at all. You will no doubt be provided with eye protection in view of the high intensity of the light used. A gel may be used on the skin to ensure maximum absorption as the light is transmitted.

The applicator head will be pressed against the skin and a short pulse of intense light will be triggered. The applicator will be moved to another area of skin and the process repeated until the whole area is covered. As for any sensation, some compare it to being pricked with a pin while others describe it as a slight sting similiar to what you feel when someone flicks an elastic band on your skin.

Due to the way hair grows, repeated sessions will be necessary. IPL hair removal can only disable hair in the growth stage so you have to return to the clinic for more sessions as the hair moves through the various resting and growth cycles. In many cases there is a period of up to 6 weeks between treatments.

Is IPL Hair Removal For You?

Is IPL hair removal for you? Perhaps. However, if your hair is red, white or grey, sorry, it won’t work. If you have fine blond hair the results may not be so impressive. Generally speaking though, there appears to be a reasonable customer satisfaction rating.

In some cases the hair is permanently stopped from growing, in other cases, treatment may be needed every six months or so. It can depend on what you want, your individual characteristics, the intensity of the light used by the therapist, and other such variables. That’s why a thorough consultation is needed first so you understand what to expect and the therapist fully understands what you want.

So if you have been tempted to get IPL hair removal for a part of the body you want hairless, why not check out your local clinics and get some ideas on prices and the level of professionalism. Many prefer IPL hair removal over laser hair removal as it seems there is less danger of skin reaction, and due to the variable wavelengths used, it can be quicker and take fewer sessions. It most certainly comes as a relief after years of inconvenient, frequent hair removal using other methods.

When it comes to choosing a remedy to reverse pattern baldness, the choice is easily narrowed down to a few products fairly quickly. The question is how exactly, when there are so many hair loss remedies on the market that could be used. The answer is simple, Minoxidil and FDA approval. The fact is that there are many natural hair loss products available, but not all contain Minoxidil that comes with a FDA approval.

In non-prescription hair regrowth products, Minoxidil is one of the few, if not only, ingredient that is FDA approved. This might not sound like a big deal; after all, many products are FDA approved. The question though is how many natural hair loss products are FDA approved? That is a different story, and that is why hair loss products containing Minoxidil are recommended and used by most people.

Generally hair loss products are classified as dietary supplements by the FDA and so are typically not subject to approval by the FDA, especially as they are mostly formulated from natural ingredients. Why, because the FDA does not see the need to regulate natural products. The manufacturers of natural products are however responsible to ensure that their products are not harmful to humans. Whilst the FDA ensures that the manufacturing processes are hygienic and the products are correctly labeled with regards to the ingredients.

Minoxidil was originally an oral drug that was called Loniten and was approved by the FDA to treat high blood pressure. It was discovered that one of the side effects of Loniten was to slow down the loss of hair and even help hair regrowth, which to some people was an even greater cure!

It is probably fair to say if you start researching hair loss remedies you will come across Minoxidil sooner rather than later, and the reference will most likely be about the effectiveness in stopping the loss of hair and regrowing hair. The most well known product that contains Minoxidil that has been on the market for many years is Rogaine, which was the first hair loss product to be released following the discovery of the "side effects" of Loniten.

The patent on Minoxidil expired in 1996, allowing other companies to take advantage of the effectiveness of its when formulating their hair loss products. This enabled numerous other manufacturers to include it together with other natural ingredients to produce their hair loss remedies. Because of the inclusion of Minoxidil, many of these remedies are labeled as "FDA approved", but the truth is only Minoxidil is approved as an ingredient rather than the formulation of the product in its entirety.

There are numerous hair loss products that now contain Minoxidil which can be applied either as a cream, or can be taken orally depending on the product chosen. It all comes down to personal preference, but no matter what you choose to do, you can be assured that you will see results soon enough.

But on that note, you are not going to see results the moment you start using Minoxidil. That’s not to say you will never see results, because that would be absolutely untrue. But the truth is that you will have to wait for some time, even up to a few months before you see meaningful hair regrowth. Is this a bad thing? Absolutely not, the treatment is aimed at natural hair regrowth, which given the normal rate at which hair grows will take some time. Over time your hair will regrow, and you will start to see a return of your natural hair.

So really, what are you waiting for? These "FDA approved" hair loss products can be purchased online quite easily. All you need to do is choose a hair loss product, which can then usually be purchased online. By electing the online ordering option you can have it delivered discreetly without fuss. There are many people who are embarrassed about their loss of hair, which is perfectly natural. It can be humiliating, but luckily with Minoxidil it is something that does not need to be endured any longer.

The goal of laser hair removal is permanent hair reduction. According to the FDA, permanent hair reduction is defined as reduction of hair density for a period of time equal to one full growth cycle of hair. Of note, there is no treatment available that provides permanent complete hair removal.

The laser light targets a dark pigment called melanin which is produced in the bulb, or deep part of the hair follicle during anagen phase. The laser generates heat in this pigment, thus destroying the melanin producing cells along with the bulb and remainder of the follicle. Laser hair removal is only effective on hairs during the anagen phase. At any given time, up to 90% of the hairs in a region may be in anagen. Anagen phase may last from 6 months to ten years, while catagen lasts several weeks and telogen may be one to three months. For these reasons, the laser hair removal treatment generally must be repeated 3 to 5 times to catch all hairs in the anagen phase.

The efficiency of any particular laser hair removal system depends on the ability of that laser to target the melanin in hair follicles without hurting surrounding skin. This has to do with the wavelength of the laser, the pulse duration (length of time the skin is exposed to the beam), and the fluence or power of the laser. Longer pulsed lasers enable more complete ablation of the hair follicle, however have greater risk of thermal (heat) damage to surrounding tissue (skin). Newer devices incorporate cooling systems for the skin which allow longer pulse durations with less risk of non-specific thermal damage.

Lasers used for hair removal include the ruby, alexandrite, Nd:YAG, and diode laser. IPL (intense pulsed light) is also used with success for hair removal. IPL devices emit a broad band of light of varying wavelengths (a laser is one specific wavelength). Typically, a filter is used to narrow this band to the spectrum of light that is most efficiently absorbed by melanin in hair follicles. About 80% of patients respond well to laser hair removal. You should expect a 30% reduction in hair density with each treatment. Optimal results may require five or more treatments. Treatments are spaced one to three months apart. The best candidates for laser hair removal have light skin and dark hair. Laser hair removal is not without risks. There are few risks to laser hair removal, but may include blistering, scabbing, hyper-pigmentation, and hypo-pigmentation.
